Is A Spiritual Mentorship Right For You?

Spiritual mentorship is when the Lord sets you up with an elder, leader, teacher, or "parent" to help you grow spiritually. The call is not easy. To carry a cross is extremely difficult, especially when your wounded and being spiritually assaulted in the process. God knows it is difficult to do this on our own. In fact, the Lord showed us prophetically that we all need assistance by having Jesus receive help as he journeyed up Golgotha, "As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross" Matthew 27:32. However, a mentor is not just about helping you carry your cross. Mentors teach and guide you as you go. Having a mentor allows you to be challenged, have questions answered, gain clarity, and receive knowledge, wisdom and understanding from a seasoned person of God.
Jesus was the ultimate mentor. He was called Rabbi by his disciples. Rabbi in Hebrew means "My Master" or "My Teacher". The title is an honorable one and meant to be reverenced. The word disciple means "learner" or "student". Disciples are disciplined.
Who Should Be My Spiritual Mentor?
God is really great at sending destiny helpers our way when we need them. If you haven't prayed for a destiny helper and more specifically for a mentor yet, then I urge you to do so. The sooner the better. After praying, keep your eyes and ears open for who the Lord is placing on your path. Knowing the ways God speaks to you is going to be very helpful in finding the right mentor. When I work with clients, making a list of their personal language with the Lord is always one of the first things I have them do. Faith is also important. Believing and trusting the Lord is going to send someone you need your way is going to benefit you. Just make sure you act upon it once the mentor manifests. James 2:26, "For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead".
A good spiritual mentor should be a seasoned believer. They should be a "mature adult" in the spirit (in the natural too) and know their Word. To be a good teacher or mentor you don't have to go to a seminary or bible college, but you do need to be well learned in the things of God and spirit. A mentor should have plenty of lived experience in matters of spiritual warfare, prayer, worship, fasting, study, and relationship with God. The ideal mentor will have had seasons of pruning, healing, deliverance, refiners fire, and testing. When choosing a mentor be sure that they are walking in righteousness and living a life dedicated to the Lord. This is why it is imperative to follow the Lord on this and allow him to choose for you and then confirm his choice. Someone might be a great mentor but not be the right one for you. We all have different personalities and not all of them mix as well as others.
NOTE: Be aware that you will receive an impartation from the person you are under. When you allow someone to be your mentor you are agreeing to be under their spiritual authority. By default, you will receive from them spiritually. You come under their authority, enter their jurisdiction, and the both of you are yoked to a degree. Do not enter into covenants lightly. Let Jesus choose for you.
Ways A Spiritual Mentorship Can Help You
There are plenty of ways a spiritual mentorship can help you. For instance, the bible says in Matthew 18:20 "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them". According to this scripture, just having a mentor will automatically bring Jesus into the mix of all that you two do together! That's incredible! Here are a few ways a mentor can help you:
- Foundation Building: They can ensure you've built your house (yourself, mind, body, spirit) on a foundation of Jesus Christ.
- Road Mapping Mentorship: They can create personal goals according to your call and Gods will. Then help you achieve them.
- Bloodline Cleanse: Mentors should know how to restore bloodlines to Jesus Christ, break generational curses, and help with iniquity.
- Spiritual Sparring: Warfare is a real problem for us. Good mentors can guide you through battles and even teach you how to fight.
There is so much more that they can do for you, but remember all mentorships are different. It is not a one size fits all type of service. Again, the Lord knows what you are in need of and will set you up with the correct ministry and mentor.
Seasonal vs Lifelong Mentors
There are two different types of mentorships. Some are seasonal and some are for life. Some people have many different spiritual teachers over a course of a lifetime while others have only a few for their entire life. What you will be paired up with depends on your character and your call.
Seasonal mentors are there to help you during hard seasons of your life or really important seasons. God will send them if there is a time he needs to accelerate you and he needs you focused and accountable. It could be for one short season, a few months. Or it could be for a couple long seasons equaling out to a few years. It really just depends on the individual needs of the disciple.
Lifelong mentors are more like spiritual parents. We see this in the bible with the Apostle Paul and Timothy, who Paul dotes on often and calls his "son". Obviously more goes into this type of mentorship as a relationship of this type is going to be on a deeper and more intimate level.
NOTE: Please remember to use wisdom and caution. Members of opposite genders should never meet alone in person. Be very careful when going under the wing of a mentor that is of the opposite gender, please meet online or with their spouse present. There are many wolves out there and you must have your discernment up. Always err on the side of caution and let the Holy Spirit lead!
